Building a Retro Linux Gaming Computer - Part 26: Coming to You Live
February 20, 2023
It turns out it was Knoppix 3.4 released in May 2004 that obsessed me as a child, providing me with some of my earliest steps into a larger world. Not only that, but the CD-R disc it was burned on still reads even after all of these years. Considering the volatility of such media, this surprised ...

We’re simplifying the id Software Steam Store Listings
August 11, 2022
Spanning across multiple decades, id Software’s library of work is as vast as it is full of amazing games. However, this means a number of the id’s offerings have been released or reiterated in ways that can make our digital storefronts a touch…confusing. Rather than write out the differences between Final DOOM, Ultimate DOOM and just DOOM, we’re consolidating our Steam library of titles! For ...

October 19, 2021
Episode 1 of The New Eurogamer Podcast, featuring Quake legend Sujoy Roy, is now available to all. This took a little longer than expected due to faffing with RSS feeds, but you should now be able to find it in all the places you podcast. If you can't, please let me know below. Also, yes, the Eurogamer Podcast is back! But it's slightly different to what we've done before, with a new host - me...

Building a Retro Linux Gaming Computer - Part 7: The Arena Eternal
October 11, 2021
The bedrock of almost all the LAN parties played in my household, Quake III Arena also became a trusty reliable for when I felt the urge for a casual bot match. Whenever I felt the need for a fresh Linux installation, Quake III Arena always became the first game I would reinstall. This had as muc...

Quake 2 and Quake 3 Arena are now on Xbox Game Pass
August 20, 2021
Xbox Game Pass has gained two more Quake games. Following yesterday’s reveal (and release) of the Quake remaster, Microsoft added both Quake 2 and Quake 3 Arena to the line-up. Both games are only available on PC at this time, unlike the new Quake re-release, which specifically brings the game to consoles. As a result, don't expect any upgrades to the two games.33 Bethesda games are now availab...

The best FPS games on PC
November 1, 2019
The best shooters endure. While other genres warp beyond recognition, there is something solid about the first-person shooter that makes it as dependable as a nice big AK-47. Maybe it's the gung-ho simplicity – look down a barrel and pull the trigger. It’s as fun to fire a double-barrelled shotgun from an early 90s FPS as the slick shotties of today. For that reason, this list runs the gamut from genre classics to those released in the last year. There’s bound to be something for you in this,...

Five of the Best: Health pick-ups
September 6, 2019
Welcome to another week of Five of the Best, a series where we celebrate the overlooked parts of video games, like hands! And potions! And dinosaurs! And shops! They're the kinds of things etched unwittingly into memory, like an essential ingredient of a favourite dish you could never put a finger on. And I want to spark discussion, so please share memories as they flash into your mind. Today, another five. The topic... Health pick-ups! Oh how very specific - but I need to be. I'm not talkin...

Tim Willits leaving Id Software after 24 years
July 18, 2019
One of the last of the Id Software old guard is parting company with the studio soon. Tim Willits wasn’t part of the original team of founders, but was there early enough to be credited as level designer on 1995’s Ultimate Doom and have a credit in almost everything since. After working as a designer and creative director on the likes of Quake, Doom 3 and Rage, and acting as studio director thr...

Google Deepmind s neural net plays a mean game of CTF
July 5, 2018
Google’s DeepMind research division have made a pretty solid argument that the future of game AI is in self-teaching neural networks. Not content with destroying chess forever (credit to the BBC), their most recent project was to have a team of AI agents learn how to play a Quake 3-derived game of Capture The Flag from scratch. Not only did they master it, but after nearly half a million simula...

The 50 best FPS on PC
May 21, 2018
The best shooters endure. While the state of the art moves on in other genres and leaves old designs in the dust, it’s as fun to fire a well-made shotgun from an early 90s FPS as from one released today. For that reason, this list runs the gamut from genre classics to those released in the last year. There’s bound to be something for you inside. (more…)

Have You Played Quake III?
October 5, 2015
Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time. Specifically, Quake III DM17: The Longest Yard, which is what I think of whenever I think of Quake III. Every Q3A player has their favourite map, and I'm not even making a claim to DM17 being the 'best' map, but it's my map. It's the one which encapsulates what Quake III is about, to my mind.

Notch proposes Quake match to settle Scrolls dispute with Zenimax
August 17, 2011
Sometimes legal disputes are settled out of court, but rarely are they settled via old-fashioned video game showdown. That's the solution proposed by Markus "Notch" Persson, whose company Mojang was recently targeted for legal action over the title of their upcoming Scrolls. Bethesda parent compa...

John Carmack recounts Quake
June 23, 2011
id Software wizard John Carmack has recounted the experience of creating Quake, the seminal first-person shooter that turns 15 today. "My defining memory of the game was fairly early in development, when I no-clipped up into a ceiling corner and looked down as a Shambler walked through the world with its feet firmly planted on the ground," Carmack, who is knee deep in Rage development, said on the Bethblog. "This looked like nothing I had ever seen before; it really did seem like I had a wi...
